Maternity Services Imitate the Comforts of Home
The Lea & Arthur L. Powell Maternal and Child Care Center is a very special place at Montgomery Hospital Medical Center (MHMC) in Norristown.
Our physicians and staff are dedicated to making the birth of a new baby a warm, comfortable, and joyous occasion. The caring, professional maternity staff gives the family the information and support they need to feel more relaxed before, during, and following the birth experience. Mother and baby receive the most advanced health care available while enjoying the comforts of a home-like surrounding in a private room. This family-centered approach to newborn care helps bring the family closer together as they open this special chapter in their lives.
The Center is designed so that the entire birthing process – including labor, delivery, recovery, and post-partum – takes place in the family’s own private room emphasizing warmth, privacy, and comfort. The Center also features a state of the art central fetal monitoring system which provides close and continual surveillance of both mother and baby during the labor process. Montgomery’s staff is there to meet all medical needs. Nurses are specially trained to care for women before, during and after delivery. This includes training in managing high-risk pregnancies and any complications that may arise. Pediatricians and neonatologists are on call 24 hours each day to provide specialized care.
The nursery is accessible only to authorized personnel so that the baby is safe and sound at all times. Should the newborn need to stay for an extended period, either mother or father can stay overnight in the Parents Nesting Place, a private and comfortable area close to the baby. At discharge, a maternity nurse reviews a variety of infant care issues as well as physical and emotional issues to assure confidence and capability for home care.
“The nurses are great,” says Kim Vitelli of Collegeville, who has delivered all three of her babies at MHMC. “They are so supportive and full of helpful hints. No matter how busy they are, as soon as you call for them, they are right there by your side…. The best part is that the same nurses have been there for all three of my deliveries.”
Maternity services at MHMC also include midwifery, breastfeeding support, and childbirth education classes. All new and expectant parents are invited to participate in childbirth classes, including those who are delivering babies elsewhere.
