Maternity Services Imitate the Comforts of Home
The Lea & Arthur L. Powell Maternal and Child Care Center is a very special place at Montgomery Hospital Medical Center (MHMC) in Norristown.
The unit has been designed for complete mother and child safety and is fully equipped to manage all obstetrical complications. It includes nine Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum suites, decorated with pastel colors and comfy chairs that create a relaxing ambiance in which mother, father and baby can easily bond.
"We are devoted to our maternity patients," says clinical nurse manager Marie Mo, R.N. "Patients have excellent continuity of care. Nurses know patients by name, and patients have the same nurses caring for them during labor, delivery and postpartum."
Experienced nurses are specialty trained to care for women before, during and after delivery. This includes training in managing high-risk pregnancies and any complications that may arise.
"The nurses are great," says Kim Vitelli of Collegville, who has delivered all three of her babies at MHMC. "They are so supportive and full of helpful hints. No matter how busy they are, as soon as you call for them, they are right there by your side. . . . The best part is that the same nurses have been there for all three of my deliveries."
Mo also emphasizes the importance of the close-knit environment among medical professionals and maternity patients. She agrees that the low turnover rates are a benefit to patients. "We are all long-term employees," she says. "Doctors, nurses and residents have great relationships . . . we work together to ensure that the experience for new mothers is just what the patient wants it to be."
Maternity services at MHMC also include midwifery, perinatology and childbirth education classes. All new and expectant parents are invited to participate in childbirth classes, including those who are delivering babies elsewhere.
